Overview
Ursodeoxycholic acid is also known as ursodiol. It is the precursor of the chenodeoxycholate . It is used as the cholagogue and choleretic. It is also known as the secondary bile acid.
Indications
- It is used to decrease the absorption of cholesterol
- It is used to dissolves the gallstones
Mechanism of Action
It reduces the increased level of liver enzyme and promotes the flow of bile through liver or prevent the liver cells, it get concentrated over there and prevent the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver and inhibit the intestinal absorption of the cholesterol.

It is about 98% bound to serum protein

It undergoes conjugation in the liver

Side Effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting

Contraindication
- Contraindicated in pregnant women
- Contraindicated in liver problems
