Overview

Carbimazole the tablet contains the active substance carbimazole. It belongs to a group of medicines called anti-thyroid agents which are used to prevent the formation of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland. It is used when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism).

Indications

• It is used to reduce the formation of thyroid hormones in adults and children with an overactive thyroid gland.

Mechanism of Action

Carbimazole is the most commonly used medicine for hyperthyroidism. It works by reducing the number of thyroid hormones that your thyroid gland makes. Carbimazole may be used alone or together with other treatments for hyperthyroidism.
Carbimazole is a pro-drug as after absorption it is converted to the active form, methimazole. Methimazole prevents thyroid peroxidase enzyme from iodinating and coupling the tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin, hence reducing the production of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 (thyroxine).

Side Effects

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them.

• Sore throat
• Mouth ulcers
• High temperature or fever
• Significant tiredness
• Increased bruising or bleeding tendency
• You are feeling generally unwell or think that you may have an infection

Warning & Precaution

• If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, tell your doctor straight away. Your treatment with Carbimazole may need to be continued during pregnancy if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to you and your unborn baby. Do not breast-feed if you are taking Carbimazole. This is because small amounts may pass into the mother's milk
• Before taking this medicine, you should let your doctor know if you have liver and kidney problems.
• You can drive when taking Carbimazole, but do not drive until you know how it affects you.

Drug Interaction

• Theophylline used to treat asthma or breathing problems
• Medicines called anticoagulants, which are used to thin the blood e.g. warfarin
• Steroids such as prednisolone
• An antibiotic called erythromycin
• Medicine for heart failure called digitalis
• Medicines for high blood pressure called beta-blockers.

Dosage

• Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it.
• You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends.

• Store in a cool, dry & dark place. Protected from direct sunlight.
